Get ready to hear from a member of the liberal “Squad” after President Biden delivers his State of the Union speech. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, the Democrat from Michigan, has been tapped to give a formal response to the address on behalf of the left-wing group Working Families Party. She is likely to go after the moderate Democrats in her Party for creating hurdles for Biden’s radical social spending packages as well as his position on climate change.
The progressive representative will likely praise President Biden’s stimulus bill and challenge her colleagues to push even more aggressively for the president’s total platform.
A summary of Tlaib’s speech was given to POLITICO and they have reported that she will be planning to argue that Republicans along with a couple of “intransigent” Democrats have blocked the progress that could be made. They have kept the president from lowering the cost of housing, health care, and prescription drugs.
There is no doubt that this response speech will serve to increase the chasm that exists politically within the country and even the Democratic Party. This has been a continual strain on Biden’s presidency. And all this will take place just months before an important midterm election.
At a time when the Democratic Party should be laying aside their differences and moving more towards the center politically, this will only deepen the rifts that are present. They should be working toward a united front to defeat GOP candidates, but they seem to be focusing on electing more progressive liberals to Congress.
Tlaib gave a statement to POLITICO that said, “No one fought harder for Build Back Better and a pro-democracy agenda than progressives. The work is unfinished and we’re not giving up on what our communities deserve. We need to get as much done for the people as we can this year, and elect a majority that can deliver for working families in 2023.”
This move to let Tliab respond to the president’s address is unusual. There is always a response from the Party that is not in power. But now, a member of the President’s own Party will also give an official response. This puts a spotlight on the splintered culture in Washington.
This is not the first time that the Working Families Party has been given the limelight. Last year, Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman from New York gave a response to Biden’s first joint address to Congress.
Some experts believe that Tliab will go after her moderate Democratic colleagues by name. She will mention Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.). They both opposed Biden’s Build Back Better legislation. She may also have some words for Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.). He led a group of Democrats in the center politically and threatened to kill the budget if there was no bipartisan infrastructure legislation passed first.
Maurice Mitchell, the national director of the Working Families Party, has already given us the gist of what Tliab might say. He has declared that Biden’s agenda is “incomplete.” And he has gone after the GOP leadership as well as what he calls “obstructionist Democrats.”
From what we have already heard, you should also expect Tlaib to challenge Biden to use his executive authority to do things like cancel student loans and change the way that poverty is evaluated in America. They want to expand more benefits to more Americans.
The response from Tlaib will likely end with a call to action so that progressives will be elected in the midterm elections.
This speech will be live-streamed on the Working Families Party’s Facebook page. Past responders have had hundreds of thousands of views across the platform.
Governor Kim Reynolds (R-IA) will deliver the Republican Party’s response to Biden’s State of the Union. Let’s hope that many more will hear her words, and let’s hope that many will get ready to make sweeping changes in November.
